Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions Inc. (Taos) boosted the performance of two new light-to-digital converters to suit a wider range of applications.

The patented digital light sensors convert light intensity to a digital signal output capable of direct I?C or System Management Bus (Sbus) interface.

"We've increased the performance of our new digital light sensors to support not only as broad a range of ambient light sensing applications as possible, but also any type of application that requires accurate light sensing at a reasonable cost," said Glenn Lee, Taos strategic marketing specialist for ambient lighting. In addition, both devices can help designers significantly shorten time-to-market with their direct digital interface and software support, he said. "A number of customers have already designed in the TSL2560 in less than 2 to 3 months," Lee added.

The TSL2560/61 light-to-digital converters support a dynamic range of 0 to 40,000 Lux, compared to Taos' previous generation TSL2550, which supports 0 to 10,000 Lux. This allows the user to see very low light (as in keyboard illumination applications), and a very bright light to support full mobility.

In addition, the TSL2560/61 provides 16-bit linear output, versus a 7-bit companded output in the TSL2550, for increased resolution.

Also, the TSL2560/61 is the only device on the market with interrupt capability; high/low interrupt thresholds are configurable. Since the interrupt capability is also intelligent, it can accommodate sudden changes in light, such as shadows.

Available now, the TSL2560 and TSL2561 light-to-digital converters come in two standard 6-pin packages: A CSP measuring 1.7-by-1.2-by-0.7mm and a transfer molded board (TMB) measuring 3.8-by-2.6-by-1.4mm.

An evaluation module with a USB interface is available with a suggested resale price of $125. The TSL2560/61 has a suggested resale price of $1.29 in 1,000-piece quantities. Additional information available online.
