Renesas Technology Corp. has started developing baseband processors at its newly acquired design company, Renesas Design France S.A.S, to offer customers a total baseband and applications processor solution for mobile phones.

Renesas (Tokyo) has been promoting its SH-Mobile processor as an application processor and designed it to connect to any baseband LSI. By adding a baseband processor designed in house, Renesas intends to offer its own platform for mobile phone customers.

"Customers expect us to supply system platforms including baseband and application processors as well as software," said a Renesas spokeswoman.

To speed development, Renesas took over the design team of the platform division of MELCO Mobile Communications Europe S.A., a mobile phone development company of Mitsubishi Electric Corp.

The first development project will be the baseband processor for dual-mode GSM and W-CDMA handsets for NTT Docomo. Renesas and Docomo agreed to jointly develop the processor last July to back up Docomo's 3G-phone promotion in the European market.

The two companies will complete developing a single chip LSI for a baseband LSI and SH-Mobile processor the first half of 2006.
