Epcos announced that they have optimized its discharge resistor modules based on hybrid ceramics to simplify mounting of discharge resistors on PFC capacitors and enhance reliability.

Discharge resistors are needed to discharge PFC capacitors to protect personnel against electric shocks, explained the company. They are also needed to switch capacitor stages in automatic PFC systems in order to prevent out-of-phase connections in parallel.

The new module is no longer supplied in a separate bag, but pre-mounted on the capacitor at the factory. Mounting of the module between the terminals of the capacitor provides IP20 shock hazard protection to VDE0106, Part 100, while cable connections can also be made more easily, added the company. These new devices discharge capacitors to 75V or less within 60s. Before reconnection, they must be discharged to 10 percent of their rated voltage or less.
