Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd has developed an 82-inch thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) TV panel, which the company claims is the largest produced to date.

Samsung (Seoul, Korea) developed the 82-inch panel at its 7th generation fab slated to come online at the end of this month in Tangjeong, Korea. The 7G line will begin mass production at the end of March.

The panel is the first product from the S-LCD Corp. joint venture announced by Samsung and Japan-based Sony Corp. last year.

Samsung will use the fab primarily to build LCD modules for 23-, 26-, 32-, 40-, and 46-inch flat-panel LCD TVs.

The 7th generation fab uses glass substrates that measure 1.87m-by-2.20m. Two 82-inch substrates can be produced from a single glass substrate.

The 82in. LCD panel uses Samsung's super patterned-ITO vertical alignment (S-PVA) technology to achieve extra-wide viewing angles. In addition, the panel has a low-dispersion color filter and ultra high aperture ratio, achieving a contrast ratio of at least 1200:1 and brightness of 600nit (cd/m2). Response times are 8ms or faster.
