Nortel is collaborating with SIPquest, a leading developer of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based IP telephony software applications, to develop applications that will allow operators to deliver SIP-based multimedia services to wireless devices.

The initial focus will be on Presence and Instant Messaging capabilities delivered to smartphones and handhelds like RIM's Blackberry and the, Sony-Ericsson P900.

The companies say they are planning to bring cellular and Wi-Fi client solutions together as the market evolves and thus offer dual-mode functionality.

The solution will use SIPquest's IMS cellular client that resides on the handheld and Nortel's Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5200.
