Japanese electronics company Toshiba Corp. has acquired Socrates Software India, an embedded software and reusable software component developer for digital consumer and personal communication applications.

Based here, Socrates was set up four years ago as the Indian subsidiary of FTD Technology, Singapore, and had become a supplier of software to Toshiba. It will now work for Toshiba alone and will reinforce the Japanese company's system-on-chip solutions expertise.

The price of the acquisition was not disclosed. Toshiba already outsources software development to two other Indian firms, Sasken Communication and Wipro Technologies.

Socrates has proven ability to deliver embedded solutions and it will be positioned as a major hub within Toshiba's software development organization and as a key contributor to the development of software products, said Kazutoshi Eguchi, senior manager, Toshiba Corporation Semiconductor Company.

Toshiba is believed to have plans to add hundreds of engineers from about 125 on staff at present.
