Switches target industrial apps

Electroswitch offers a large selection of heavy-duty switches for industrial applications. These designs include detent-, snap- and cam-action rotary switches as well as tap and knife switches. Offering a wide range of current ratings from milliamps to 10,000A and voltage ratings from millivolts to 13,800V, these devices measure between two inches to two feet in width.

The company noted that all of its industrial switches come with long-life contacts for trouble-free service and reliable performance even under the most severe conditions of shock and vibration. Many specific models are available in key lock, gear driven, and application-specific custom configurations.

The detent-action switches, for example, are designed for 5A to 30A at 600V and provide up to 16 positions and 75 poles. Instrument switches in the detent-action product line have "make-before-break" (shorting) contacts and allow sequential connections to the same switching deck.

All control switches are available in a spring return-to-normal (vertical) position as a standard feature. Five basic series are available in four different continuous amperage ratings. These include Series 28 (5A at 600V), Series 25 (10A at 600V), Series 21 (15A at 600V), Series 31 (15A at 600V) and Series 24 (30A at 600V).

The Series 21, 25 and 28 switches feature four-hole mounts. Series 24 devices have a three-hole mount, while Series 31 parts are available with either a single-hole or a four-hole mount. Optional features include waterproof mounts, gear-driven operation, push-to-turn handles, and key operation. All series have terminal screws for easy, strong connections.

Snap-action switches offer current ratings from 20A to 200A at 600V with up to 4 positions and 12 poles. The snap-action design ensures quick make and break action with about a 10ms transfer time that is not dependent on the operator. Contacts are enclosed in molded phenolic insulating disks, but to minimize resistance and heating the stationary contacts extend outside the disks and serve as connecting terminals.

Non-shorting ("break-before-make") contacts are standard for the snap-action switches, however, shorting ("make-before-break") contacts are available. A "sweep" contact option is available to maintain the connection with the rotor through consecutive positions. Rotation is unlimited and continuous in both directions but can be limited to customer-specified positions.

Spring return is an available feature on the Series 101, 103, and 105 models. All models are equipped with four-hole mounts. The Series 101 model is also available with a single-hole mount. Waterproof and base-mount versions are optional.

Cam-action switches are rated for 25A to 800A at 600V and provide up to 12 positions and 24 poles. Switching action is controlled by the shape of the cams, allowing a nearly infinite number of combinations using standard parts. This enables users to easily design their own switches. Most models are available with base-, door-, or waterproof mounts as well as single-hole, two-hole, or four-hole mounts.

Options include key interlock, key operation, spring return, gear-driven operation, and padlock compatibility. Pre-configured, application-specific models include voltmeter transfer switches, ammeter transfer switches, motor starting switches, a motor reversing switch, and a heater control switch.

Tap switches feature dual (continuous/intermittent) ratings ranging from 100A to 2,400A and are available in single-, two-, or three-phase models with molded or fabricated bases. They can be configured for either manual or motor operation, and can be easily modified. Options include higher voltage and amperage ratings, angled terminals, key-interlock provisions, auxiliary switches for remote indication, an "OFF" position, and a mechanical-release handle.

Additional capabilities such as series/parallel switching, wye-delta switching, generator winding controls, high-frequency switching, motor reversing, and polarity reversing are also available.

Available in single or double throw configurations, knife switches offer current ratings of 30A to 10,000A. The Type A knife switches are front-connected units with molded handles and insulated bases. They feature adjustable contacts and Saf-T-Guard handles.

Type DL knife switches are back-connected units without base plates. DL switches use stud connections for models rated at 400A and below, while bus-bar connections are used for models rated at 600A and higher.
