The fastest ATCA telecom blade?

During the CTIA Wireless 2005 show in New Orleans, Artesyn Communication Products, a subsidiary of Artesyn Technologies, demonstrated what it claims as the industry's fastest AdvancedTCA telecom blade.

The new KatanaPPB blade combines up to six PowerPC processors with a high-speed ATCA fabric interface, and provides a modular, scaleable, high-density solution that enables telecom OEMs to increase control and packet processing performance while reducing blade count. "The KatanaPPB's six processors, high-speed switched fabric interface, and dedicated control and data planes make it the industry's fastest ATCA telecom blade," commented Todd Wynia, VP of marketing at Artesyn Communication Products.

Aside from the six Freescale PowerPC 7447A processors, the blade is equipped with 10GB of DDR SDRAM and 384MB of flash memory. It features a high-speed PICMG 3.1-compliant ATCA interface with ten Gigabit Ethernet channels.

And to optimize control performance and packet processing throughput, the KatanaPPB provides separate control and data planes, which are managed by a 24-port Gigabit Ethernet switch. The control plane combines a local PCI-X bus, which links all six processors, with two Gigabit Ethernet channels, which connect the processors to the ATCA Base Fabric through the Ethernet switch. The data plane, also managed by the Ethernet switch, uses nine Gigabit Ethernet channels to link the six processors, and eight Gigabit Ethernet channels to access the ATCA High Speed Fabric.

The KatanaPPB features a redundant PICMG 3.0 Intelligent Platform Management Interface, which incorporates dual I?C-based Intelligent Platform Management Buses (IPMB) to enhance system management by making it easy for shelf management controllers to monitor, control and exchange information with the KatanaPPB. Software support for the KatanaPPB includes a Carrier Grade Linux BSP that provides a robust, high-availability platform for developing and deploying telecom infrastructure applications. The KatanaPPB is also available with a VxWorks BSP.

OEM pricing for the KatanaPPB equipped with a pair of MPC7447A processors starts at $4,407.
