Huaya Microelectronics Ltd, a Shanghai-based supplier of custom video chips, announced Wednesday (March 16) it would license the MIPS32 4K SMIC.18 hard core from MIPS Technologies to develop digital TV (DTV) products for the China market.

According to MIPS, the MIPS hard core is reprogrammable to allow upgrades in software as protocol specifications or market requirements evolve. Core specifications include a worst-case frequency of 190MHz and a die area of 3.42 square millimeters.

"The MIPS architecture is well known and respected in China," said Biao Zhang, chief executive of HuayaMicro, in a statement. "Now that MIPS Technologies has demonstrated its commitment to the China market by opening an R&D Center in Shanghai, we are fully confident that, by collaborating with MIPS Technologies, HuayaMicro can deliver world-class DTV products to our customers in a timely and cost-effective manner."

MIPS announced March 1 it would establish a China subsidiary, MIPS Technologies (Shanghai) Co. Ltd.
