Metalink Ltd announced the commercial availability of a new generation of VDSL transceivers capable of transmitting both upstream and downstream at rates of 100Mbps at distances over 200m.

Metalink, a fabless semiconductor supplier for wireless and wireline broadband communication solutions, developed the chipset leveraging its VDSLPlus technology. Metalink co-developed VDSLPlus with Infineon Technologies AG in 2003 to compete with existing VDSL technologies.

"We have demonstrated our VDSLPlus technology to leading system vendors and carriers in Korea and Japan, and systems based on our 100Mbps symmetric VDSL chipsets are currently in the advanced development phase by leading Japanese and Korean vendors," said Tzvi Shukhman, chairman and chief executive of Metalink, in a statement.

The chipset is designed to be spectrally compatible with existing services such as ISDN, ADSL and ADSL2+. It is designed to provider fiber-like speeds over existing copper infrastructure, according to the company.
