Seeking exposure for its EDA tools here, Magma Design Automation's Indian unit has joined the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras.

Under the program, 125 students have enrolled for Magma's "CAD4VLSI" course offered by the Institute. IIT Madras is the first Indian institute to participate in Magma's "India IC Excellence" initiative. The effort seeks to create an IC design environment in India that addresses the shortage of trained IC design engineers.

Magma's IC software design flow has been integrated into the VLSI curriculum at IIT Madras, one of the few institutes in India training engineers for VLSI design.

Less than 2,000 students in India graduate in VLSI design annually, and the new course would provide 125 newly trained engineers. That's a significant addition to India's design workforce, according to Anand Anandkumar, managing director, Magma India.

The company and IIT Madras are exploring other areas of cooperation, he said.

Chip and EDA companies frequently offer access to their technologies as a way to build up customer loyality for their products.
