Power amplifiers mix higher power, lower distortion

austriamicrosystems' new AS1702/3/4/5 family of 1.6W single-channel audio power amplifiers promise to offer portable electronics designers higher output power and lower distortion solutions.

These fully differential audio power amplifiers offer higher output power (1.6W) at comparable distortion levels, or lower distortion levels at comparable output power than similar products, making them ideally suited as front-ends for battery-powered audio devices as well as other hand-held battery-powered devices, said the press release.

The amplifiers are designed to drive 4 and 8 loads and the integrated gain circuitry, and their different gain levels (adjustable gain via external components, 0dB, 3dB and 6dB) facilitate reduced component designs. In addition, a differential input design improves noise and common-mode rejection, while a bridge-tied load (BTL) design minimizes external component count while providing Hi-Fi audio power amplification.

The integrated shutdown circuitry disables the bias generator and amplifiers, and reduces quiescent current consumption to less than 100nA, explained austriamicro. The shutdown input can be set as active-high or active-low, and all devices contain comprehensive click-and-pop suppression circuitry that reduces audible clicks and pops during power-up and shutdown.

The new audio power amplifiers are available in 10-pin MSOP package and are pin-compatible with LM4895 (AS1705), TS4994 (AS1702) and MAX9718A/B/C/D. Their small size makes them ideal for 2.7V to 5V powered devices, added the company.
