Tyco Electronics released an improved version of its SCA2 disk drive interconnect that features a number of mechanical and electrical improvements to address increased data rates and regulatory requirements.

According to the company, improvements in the electrical performance of the 40-position connector make it well suited for newer generation 3.5-inch drives operating at 4.25Gbps and 8.5Gbps data rates. Insertion loss has been improved by as much as 4dB and noise has also been reduced, added Tyco. The product is a press-fit and RoHS compliant.

The press release further stated that mechanical attributes, such as blind mating, contact sequencing and ESD features have been maintained, making the product backward compatible. The SCA-2 connector interface is consistent with the Small Form Factor SFF-8451 documentation, with samples, drawings and electrical data (models and performance reports) already available.
