Technology and market research firm IDC reports that decreasing prices of LCD monitors helped the segment to stay ahead of the CRT monitors in the Australian display market.

According to the research firm, consumers prefer LCD monitors to CRTs since the former has lower prices and longer life span than the latter.

"The 2004 monitor market saw a pronounced migration to the LCD form factor, with six out of every 10 monitors shipped being an LCD," Mercie Clement, IDC analyst for PC hardware, says.

Clement adds that the CRT segment is not long in being phased out by LCD monitors. The report forecasts the segment's highest sales record this year; with high-end models the bestsellers. Manufacturers will also be integrating entry-level LCDs with new models of PCs.

In 2006, LCDs are forecast to be the industry mainstream although sales records are projected to decline.
