PGI expands cross-platform support

The Portland Group released v6.0 of its PGI Workstation-class of Fortran, C and C++ compilers and development tools, which will provisionally support Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, both of which are expected to debut later this year.

"Now users have an effective alternative to the captive suppliers; PGI compilers and tools now support both major processing platforms and both major 64bit OSes," said Douglas Miles, director, The Portland Group, a wholly-owned subsidiary of STMicroelectronics.

Utilized in high-performance computing applications, PGI compilers and tools support 32bit and 64bit Linux workstations, servers and clusters based on Advanced Micro Devices and Intel microprocessors.

Release 6.0 demonstrated an 8 to 15 percent improvement using standard benchmarks, including SPECCPU 2000, Polyhedron, NAS Benchmarks and STREAM, and now supports static objects larger than 2GB, according to the company.

Complete details of evaluation copies of the new PGI compilers for Microsoft's 64bit Windows OS are available at the company's website. Registration is required.

Pricing for the 64bit Windows compilers will be announced later this year.
