With help from the India Semiconductor Association, the Birla Institute of Technology and Science will establish India's first center for applied research and professional excellence here in three months.

To be called the BITS-RIT APEX Center, the center is being set in partnership with the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York State. It will be an extension of the Oyster's Lab BITS set up in Pilani, Rajasthan in northwestern India, and will include a training center offering basic and advanced courses.

BITS will conduct the courses and certification at the center, while RIT will funnel research projects to it. RIT also will set up an international RF-analog research facility at the center, with the India Semiconductor Association catalyzing the partnership and facilitating industry participation in the center.

There is a distinct lack of analog and RF expertise in India, a bottleneck considering the movement in the country toward integrated SoC design. The proposed international RF-Analog research center will serve as a framework to foster collaborative industry-academia efforts.

"This initiative is path-breaking as this center is all about research and developing IP whereas the Indian technology industry's occupation till now has been on development or engineering. It is entirely appropriate that this trend is set by the semiconductor industry," said Rajendra Khare, chairman of the India Semiconductor Association, in a statement.
