LightPath unveils long wavelength infrared lenses

LightPath Technologies Inc. announced last week it now has the ability to mold long wavelength infrared (IR) aspheric optics.

The lenses, designated Black Diamond, is said to allow aspheric lenses with wavelengths of 1?m to 14?ms, compared to previous lenses limited to visible and near-IR wavelengths.

According to LightPath, the Black Diamond technology enables high-performance, cost-effective molded aspheric lenses without individual diamond tuning or other lengthy manufacturing methods. The technology limits light transmission loss compared to Germanium, particularly as temperatures increase, according to the company.

The aspheric optics reduces the number of lenses required for typical thermal imaging systems, said LightPath.

Lenses up to 15mm are now available for production from LightPath and custom designs are available for quotation. Lenses up to 30mm are under development.
