The EPM2210 device, the largest member of Altera Corp.'s MAX II complex PLD family that features 2,210 logic elements, is now shipping in volume.

Production volume of EPM2210 completes the company's rollout of its MAX II CPLD family. The PLD vendor claims that since its MAX II devices offer the lowest cost per I/O pin, they are being integrated into cost-sensitive, volume-driven applications in the consumer, communications, industrial, computing and automotive markets.

For example, National Instruments (NI) selected MAX II devices for its NI CompactRIO embedded system modules because of their low cost, small size and extended temperature range.

"The higher logic density offered by the MAX II family allows customers to integrate existing functions from other devices, substantially reducing board space and power requirements while lowering overall system costs," said Luanne Schirrmeister, director of CPLD product marketing at Altera.

The MAX II device family includes four members ranging in density from 240 to 2,210 logic elements.

In 500,000-unit quantities, the EPM2210 is priced at $7 each.
