During the Embedded Systems Forum at the ESC-China 2005, the CEO of Chipcon AG (Norway) discussed the development trends of ZigBee, and announced products that are specifically targeted at this market. "Our CC2420 RF transceiver integrates PHY and MAC layers, and features 65,000 channels," said Chipcon CEO Svein Anders Tunheim. "Additional features include low power consumption, 250Kbps data rate, fast wake-up time (<30ms) and status detecting of CSMA-CA channel."

ZigBee is a global standard for wireless monitoring and control applications. New technology developments in this standard target reduction in system costs and power consumption. Main applications for ZigBee include home automation, commercials building automation, factory monitoring and consumer electronics products.

Chipcon also disclosed its plan to release a single chip RF transceiver and real SoC solution. "Our goal is to reduce chips and systems' cost as well as power consumption, and to enhance integration," Tunheim said. The company has also partnered with Infotech China to promote a wireless meter reading system based on its CC2420 RF transceiver.

Meanwhile, freescale Semiconductor, another company vying for the ZigBee market, announced its total ZigBee solution that contains an MC13193 RF transceiver, MAC layer, ZigBee software, MCU and sensors. According to Freescale, its ZigBee solution can provide users "one stop shopping and integration."
