On the heels of its recently released 7-1/2-digit precision DMM (digital multimeter), as well as the competing follow-on product from National Instruments, DMM maker Signametrics is rolling out two new 7-1/2-digit DMMs, this time in pxi and compactpci card provides GPS, GSM support" target=_blank>cpci (CompactPCI) form-factors.

Signametrics's SMX2064 plug-in offers measurement rates up to 20,000-readings/s. It also has a DC current measurement range down to 50pA. With 7-1/2-digit accuracy, oscilloscope-like triggering, and extended DC and resistance measurement ranges, the two new PXI DMMs are aimed at advanced test systems applications.

Like its PCI predecessor, the SMX2064 is a full-featured PXI/cPCI DMM. With 24,000,000 counts of dynamic range, it can resolve 10nV. The SMX2064 also lets you make 6-wire guarded resistance measurements, as well as LCR (inductance, capacitance, resistance) measurements. Beyond that, it will also let you make frequency and timing measurements.

But wait, there's more
The SMX2064 can also be used to respond to thermocouple and RTD (resistance temperature detector) measurements, too, and it can work as a VI (voltage-current) source. You can use it to perform accurate leakage measurements with a programmable DC source. In fact, the large number of current sources designed into the SMX2064 let it measure from micro? to Gohms. In fact, its performance competes head on with costly bench-top and VXI-hosted DMMs.

The SMX2060 model, also a 7-1/2 digit DMM, provides the same high accuracy as the SMX2064 but at a lower price. The SMX2060 shares the SM2064'ss 24,000,000-count measurement, and features 1,400 reading/s measurement speed. It does 4-wire resistance measurement, as well as frequency measurements, and temperature measurements.

Same touch and feel
Both the SMX2064 and the SMX2060 also give you the touch-and-feel of bench-top DMMs. What's more, they're both compatible with the existing line of PXI and PCI DMM families from Signametrics, presenting a ready upgrade path. All of the company's DMMs use the same front-panel software, as well as the same DLL (dynamic link libraries) for all Windows applications, and Linux drivers.

Preserving the accuracy of the SMX2064 and SMX2060 DMMs in a multiple signal system would also require switching modules. Signametrics's switching modules for PXI/cPCI are complements to the new SMX2064 and SMX2060. They ensure high isolation, and extremely low noise and thermal EMF. The combination of a high-accuracy SMX2064 or SMX2060 with fully-isolated low-noise SMX4032 switching modules can make a foundation for high precision test-and-measurement systems.

Price and availability
The SMX2064 is priced at about $2,400, and the SMX2060 is priced at about $1,600.
