Marvell touts WLAN solutions at IIC-China

Marvell Semiconductor presented its WLAN solution including 801.11g(b) access point/gateway and WLAN embedded solutions during the IIC-China Conference in Shenzhen.

Marvell claims its 88W8000G and 88W8510 chipsets to be the industry's most highly integrated 801.11g(b) access point/gateway solutions, which eliminated the use of external CPU and Fast Ethernet port for wired infrastructures, greatly reducing BOM cost. The 88W8000G RF transceiver integrates LNA, VCO, frequency synthesizer and other necessary RF and analog functions into a single chip. Meanwhile, the 88W8510 integrates DSSS and OFDM baseband processor, MAC processor, embedded ARM CPU, on-chip memory, advanced encryption, QoS, external SDRAM/FLASH memory controller and Fast Ethernet MAC and PHY.

"Currently, primary manufacturers of mobile phones are using Marvell's chips. Power consumption is a difficult problem for embedded application such as mobile phones" said Zhang Jie, sales manager of Marvell Semiconductor Beijing Ltd.

"WLAN application in China will be a large market," Zhang said. "China Netcom, one of the leading telecom carriers in China, is prepared to launch a so-called 'CLAN' alliance, which will be established next week, including UTStarcom and CEC Cellon Wireless and Marvell. Among all the members, Marvell is the only WLAN IC provider," Zhang said.

"Besides providing low power consumption and small footprint WLAN ICs, Marvell also offers total WLAN solutions including access point/gateway, terminals and wireless router," Zhang emphasized.
