Color sensor touts small size

Agilent Technologies Inc. claims to offer the industry's smallest CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) color sensor. Measuring 5-by-5-by-1mm, the HDJD-S722-QR999 color sensor can detect the presence of a certain color and identify its exact coordinate across the full color spectrum.

Operating from a single 5V power source, the sensor integrates color filters, photodiode arrays, amplifiers and gain selection in a single, compact package. It features uniform color filter arrays throughout the photodiode active area, which help to resolve potential inaccuracies caused by light gradient, optical aperture misalignment and tilting as well as irregularities of the package surface. The operating temperature range is -40C to 85C.

How it works
The new device is a monolithic CMOS IC solution with integrated RGB color filters combined with three interleaved sets of 3 x 3 photodiode arrays, which minimize the effect of contamination and optical aperture misalignment. The color sensor converts colored light to proportional RGB voltage outputs. The photodiodes convert the RGB light components into photocurrents, and the trans-impedance amplifiers then convert the photocurrent to analog voltages. The voltage output of each channel (R, G and B) increases linearly with increasing light intensity, and the gain of each channel can be independently set.

"This sensor's accuracy and reliability is unmatched in the industry," said Lee Soo Ghee, VP and GM for the Optoelectronic Products Division in Agilent's Semiconductor Products Group, in a statement. "It enables our customers' products to attain the highest level of accuracy possible."

Key applications include color measurement in blood glucose monitoring and other medical instruments, the detection of stains in yarns during textile manufacturing, and in LCD displays for controlling the color point of red, green and blue (RGB) LED backlighting. This device may also be used in industries such as paint, pigment and coating, cosmetics, and food and beverage.

Supplied in a QFN (quad flat no leads) lead-free package, the HDJD-S722-QR999 color sensor is priced at $10 each in low-volume quantities. Samples and production quantities are available now.
