Market research firm DisplayBank reported that shipments for plasma display panels (PDP) surged in the first quarter of this year.

According to the firm, the global PDP shipment hit 1.29 million units last quarter, up 72.8 percent annually and registering a sequential growth of 11.9 percent. The firm adds that the segment has been posting a steady growth rate of 10 percent per quarter, owing to its lower average selling prices (ASPs) than flat panel displays.

LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung SDI Co. Ltd, both from South Korea, held the highest share in the PDP market with more than 30 percent each. Shipments from the country accounted for a total of 63.7 percent in the global market.

However, prices of PDP TVs are still on the downward trend, offsetting the profits that came from the number of shipments and sales. In South Korea, the ASP of PDP TV is $1,950, while the Taiwan market offers them at $1,500. In Europe, PDP TVs come at EUR1,300 ($1.692 at EUR0.76:$1).

On the other hand, DisplayBank says lower prices of PDPs will continue to stimulate demand, which is projected to grow by 81 percent to 6.5 million units this year.
