Samsung SDI will integrate Universal Display Corp.'s proprietary organic LED technologies into its active-matrix OLED products under patent license agreement between the companies.

Samsung SDI is the leading supplier of passive-matrix OLED displays and now wants to address the active-matrix OLED market. Active-matrix displays integrate drivers in a polysilicon substrate. They are the preferred display for cellphones and other mobile devices.

According to Samsung SDI, it intends to introduce Universal Display's phosphorescent materials and associated technology in its initial active-matrix OLED products.

Phosphorescent OLEDs are up to four times more efficient than traditional fluorescent OLEDs, a key characteristic for lower power consumption, less heat generation and longer operating lifetime.

Universal Display's technology is currently used in a 2.2-inch, full-color, active-matrix phosphorescent LED operating at a brightness of 200 candelas per meter2 and consuming 125mW in video mode. This compares with 180mW operation for an equivalent backlit LCD and 240mW for a fluorescent OLED.

Universal Display works with PPG Industries Inc. to develop and commercialize phosphorescent OLED materials. It also has collaborative development programs with DuPont Displays and Seiko Epson to use phosphorescent OLED materials with ink-jet printing equipment for mass fabrication of OLEDS.
