IBM Corp. is seeking to sell or lease almost 1 million square feet of semiconductor research and manufacturing plant in East Fishkill, New York, according to an unpublished report.

Information obtained from EE Times said the facility, built in 1989, occupies six main buildings spreading over 982,987 sq. ft. on IBM's West Campus in East Fishkill. The West Campus is part of the 6 million square foot Hudson Valley Research Park, home to a large Philips Semiconductor plant and other IBM strategic partners including Sony, Infineon, Toshiba, Chartered Semiconductor, and others.

Nearly 8,000 people work in the park, according to the report.

IBM, which did not return calls for comment at press time, is readying a 300mm fab, costing $2.5 billion, on its East Campus at East Fishkill. That facility, coined by IBM as the world's most technologically advanced chipmaking plant, is slated to begin pilot production sometime this year, and has attracted partner companies such as Sony.

How IBM would transition existing equipment and personnel to the new 300mm plant is unclear. But according to the report, economic developers in the Hudson Valley area near the site are seeking to find a new user for the Fishkill facility before IBM begins dismantling the equipment line for use in other facilities and leaves the facility empty.

The facility includes a fully operational 200mm semiconductor manufacturing fab with an 8 inch. tool line. It has 103,000 sq. ft. of Class 1 clean room area valued at $250 million, along with offices, a data center, auditorium, conference center, and cafeteria.

According to the report, the IBM facility is the first operational 8 in. fab plant to come on the market in over 18 months, the last one a 500,000 sq. ft. Philips Semiconductor facility in San Antonio, Texas sold to Maxim in November 2003.
