Research firm Nomura Int. forecasts that prices of large-sized LCD monitor panels to decline throughout the year despite showing signs of stabilizing for the past few weeks.

According to Ben Lee, head of Taiwan equity research, quotes for 17-inch and 19-inch LCD monitor panels may decline to $135 and $180 from its current average selling prices (ASPs) of $160 and $215, respectively. The decline will be the result of several capacity ramps undertaken by companies, producing a series of oversupply.

However, Ross Young, president of DisplaySearch suggests that panel makers can improve their competitiveness by slowing investment speeds, selling their other facilities, providing diverse product lines and forming joint ventures. Further, production costs can be reduced through improved technological processes, factory flows and yields.
