AU Optronics to spend $1.1 billion on LCD fab

The world's third largest TFT-LCD manufacturer, AU Optronics Corp., said that it would spend about $1.1 billion on a leading-edge facility for processing glass substrates that form the basis of large-screen LCD televisions.

Taiwan's AU Optronics said the facility, known as a 7.5 generation fab, would have a monthly capacity of 30,000 substrates sized 1,950-mm by 2,250-mm. That allows for a yield per substrate of eight panels at 42-inches wide or six panels at 47 inches. Three panels at 56 inches is also an option, the company said.

The facility building is already complete, but AUO said it would wait until the second quarter of 2006 to move in equipment. Panels are expected to start rolling off the production line in the fourth quarter of that year.

The fab is in Taichung, where a handful of other LCD factories are clustered. It will be AUO's ninth fab, helping it widen its product range from screens for consumer oriented audiovisual applications to notebook PCs and HDTV-ready LCD TVs.
