Acterna unveiled a portable multi-port, multi-technology and multi-channel solution that enables carriers to test for efficient and reliable handling of voice, data and video traffic over SONET/SDH networks. The ONT-506 enables testing under realistic load conditions from the desktop or in the field via one compact chassis.

With the ONT-506, design, verification, integration and production test engineers of multi-service provisioning platforms (MSPPs), cross connects, ADMs and Next Generation (NextGen) network elements have the ability to measure the performance of thousands of channels simultaneously, minimizing the performance risk associated with relying on a single test channel. This new product supports a wide variety of test applications and technologies, including SONET/SDH, G.709 FEC, VCAT/LCAS/GFP, Ethernet, PoS, jitter, wander and OSA.

With its 15-inch color touch screen display and multi-user capability, the ONT-506 also addresses the challenges of testing next generation SONET/SDH grooming and switching performance, and its multiple ports allow users to load/analyze line interfaces simultaneously. This elevated coverage helps achieve higher-quality results, as potential line card dependencies are identified. The ONT-506's multi-port operation allows for local and remote control and its six slots provide for easy upgrades and reconfiguration (including future technologies) while in the field or in the lab.

"Because of the ONT-506's multiple port and multiple applications capabilities that provide for realistic network simulation and full-load analysis, single-channel testing becomes inferior," commented Bernhard Mueller, GM for Acterna's Optical Transport unit. "With an open, PC-based Linux architecture, the ONT-506 is also intuitive and provides the most advanced applications that can be integrated into each user's working environment."

The development of new network elements occurs in different phases. During the module design phase, it is important that the specifications of each design release are met. This phase requires instruments that support various interfaces, technologies and conformance-testing capabilities, said the company. For the system integration testing phase, the manufacturer must thoroughly test the operation of hardware and software under different load and stress conditions and identify problems, and during the test-floor phase, the manufacturer must determine the system's compliance to external specifications, including those of international standardization bodies like ANSI or ITU-T. The latter test requirements are similar to those of the system integration phase, making the ONT-506 a suitable solution. The ONT-506 is also well suited for interoperability and production testing, and any other testing scenarios that require the power and flexibility of a multi-user, multi-port, multi-technology solution.
