Elma Electronic Inc. has expanded its 12R1 commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) chassis series with a new low-weight, rugged 7U version. Offering excellent shielding capability, the new chassis weighs 20 to 25 percent less than the company's previous models.

The 7U 12R1 chassis is designed, manufactured and tested to meet the demands of military, aerospace and defense markets. It meets MIL-S-167, MIL-S-810E, MIL-S-461D and MIL-S-901D standards. The chassis is also compliant to the IEEE 1101.10/.11 mechanical specifications.

Available in 22-inch and 25-inch depths or custom sizes, the new chassis supports 6U x 160mm or 220mm cards. A wide range of backplanes up to 20 slot sizes is available in VME, VME64x, VXS, CompactPCI or other architectures. It also offers exceptional front-to-rear cooling, said the company, as a result of using a Rear Evacuative Cooling system that often uses 2 x 470 CFM free air blowers. System monitoring LEDs for dc voltages, over-temperature and fan failure are standard.

The chassis is designed for convenient, separate front access to drives via a removable hinge door. Other key features include a large patch panel for I/Os located on the rear of the chassis, two handles per side for easy lifting, 50V to 1,400V power supplies, and an optional louvered front panel to meet the International Protection 53 code according to IEC 60529 for drip requirements. A clear alodine coating provides corrosion protection and an aesthetically pleasing finish.

The 12R1 COTS chassis series is available in 2U to 9U heights in horizontal and vertical orientations. These units are designed to withstand harsh military environments and use honeycomb filters, braided gasketing and metal impregnated sheets to seal off all external seams. The 12R1 series withstands greater than 15Gs of shock and vibration. Options include rope-coil isolators, air springs, and elastomeric isolators.

Pricing for the 12R1 starts at less than $5,000. Delivery is eight to ten weeks.
