South Korea, Taiwan continue to lead TFT-LCD market

Research firm iSuppli Corp. forecasts a close competition between TFT-LCD panel makers from South Korea and Taiwan this year.

Manufacturers from both countries dominated the global market for TFT-LCD panels last year. South Korea accounted for 46 percent of shipments while Taiwan held 44 percent. This year, iSuppli forecasts that Taiwan makers will be on level with South Korea makers. Next year, Taiwan will eventually surpass South Korea's shipments, although there will still be a few percentage-points gap.

However, the firm says that actual output of the companies still depend on factors, including manufacturing yield, product mix, substrate size and throughput. Taiwan-based manufacturers are reported to have the largest TFT-LCD raw-area capacity since last year and are setting up facilities at a rapid pace. The TFT LCD industry's raw area capacity is 40.6 percent, of which, South Korea holds 36.3 percent. The gap between the two countries' area production capacity is expected to widen from 4.3 percentage-points to 12 percentage-points this year. By the end of the year, Taiwan is expected to have 24 operational TFT-LCD fabs while South Korea will have 19.
