Quake rolls out new PHY for 10GBASE-LX4, 10GBASE-CX4 apps

Quake Technologies Inc. rolled out a third generation PHY for 10GBASE-LX4 and 10GBASE-CX4 applications. The QT2045, touted to provide industry leading power consumption and an extensive feature set, enables higher port density systems as well as next-generation XENPAK and X2 optical modules.

The QT2045 utilizes a combination of an advanced 0.13?m CMOS process with Quake's proprietary high-speed/low-power design techniques. At 880mW, this new product sets a new standard for power consumption in LX4/CX4 devices, added the company.

"10G Ethernet port deployments are growing rapidly and LX4/CX4 ports are a significant portion of this growth. We are committed to providing best-in-class solutions for LX4/CX4 as well as all other 10Gbps applications."

The QT2045 is fully compliant with IEEE802.3ae and the XENPAK and X2 Multi Source Agreements (MSA). It includes the PCS and PMA blocks, and performs full link deskew and signal retiming to ensure that all interface specifications are met for robust fiber or copper link performance.

The QT2045 provides a variety of interface options, simplifying communication within a module or between a module and host board. The complete MDIO/MDC interface and register set are included for status and control of the module, while the integrated I?C interface and register set allow seamless interface to external EEPROM and DOM devices in LX4 optical modules. For added flexibility, designers have the option to interface with all four DOM devices.

The QT2045 is also suitable for copper transmission. Its programmable equalization and pre-emphasis capability optimizes link performance over copper traces or cabling and extends cable reach. Over CX4 compliant cabling, the device extends reach from the 15m called out in the 10GBASECX4 standard to 30m. This additional reach allows solutions based on the QT2045 to service up to 30 percent of the vertical links in typical corporate backbones, explained Quake. Moreover, the new PHY includes a data agnostic mode, making a suitable option for proprietary 3.125Gbps backplanes in switch/routers and blade servers.

The QT2045 keeps the same footprint as the company's previous QT2044 and QT2042 products in order to minimize PCB redesign. A comprehensive suite of Built-In-Self-Test features (BIST) simplifies module and system card development, debug and production testing.

The QT2045 is available in a 15-by-15 mm package that is compliant with the European Council Directives for RoHS, and is priced at $60 in volume quantities. An evaluation kit and a reference design are also available.
