Research firm iSuppli says that declining prices of TFT-LCDs boosted demand from the mobile phone sector this year.

According to the firm, instead of CSTN LCDs, mobile phone makers are opting for TFT LCDs due to its brighter and clearer displays. iSuppli says TFT LCD panels may represent 47 percent of the displays used by the handset segment this year, compared with only 30 percent last year. On the other hand, CSTN LCDs may account for 30 percent this year, compared to 33 percent last year.

Further, the research firm says the change in preference was significantly driven by the decrease in TFT LCD quotes for the past 12 months, with prices declining up to 40 percent compared with CSTN LCDs.

Currently, prices of 1.8in TFT LCD panels used in camera phones are pegged at $16 while quotes for 1.5in CSTN LCDs used in low-end mobile phones are pegged at $10.

The firm also says that handset sub-displays will likely be the market of CSTN LCDs, increasing its share by 41 percent. By 2009, iSuppli says the share of the CSTN LCD segment in mobile phones will be down to 20 percent.
