Qualcomm Inc. announced its Fourth-Generation Vocoder (4GV), a core voice codec suite that offers cdma2000 1X and 1xEV-DO operators the flexibility to make network adjustments that prioritize voice quality and network capacity.

According to the company, this vocoder was specifically designed to leverage 1xEV-DO Rev. A, increasing the overall quality of end-to-end services for delay-sensitive applications such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The 4GV solution supports both circuit-switched and packet-switched voice networks in a combined core that increase capacity by up to 40 percent. This integrated codec provides operators with an incremental software upgrade to simplify deployment and reduce overall costs.

"4GV is a single solution that gives the operator control to exercise its priorities in terms of capacity or voice quality to increase the reliability of their network," said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "Qualcomm designed the 4GV technology from the ground up to address network management challenges today and well into the future, making it an ideal codec to deliver IP-based voice services such as video telephony and push to talk."
