Solar cell manufacturers in Zhejiang are increasing output amid positive market forecast. There are about 15 solar cell makers in the province. They account for 10 percent of mainland China's total solar cell output. Demand for solar cells is expected to go up by 30 percent this year.

Over the past years, mainland China's solar cell industry has registered an annual production growth rate of 25 percent, on average. This year, total output of solar cells and solar modules in the country is estimated to top 100 million units against a production capacity of 200 million units.

In 2002, the State Development Planning Commission and the Ministry of Science and Technology rolled out the five-year National Sunshine Program. The program, with a $1.2 billion capital, supports the research, production and application of solar energy in mainland China.

According to market research firm Beijing Mone Inc., mainland China became one of the top 10 suppliers in the world in 2003, when its total capacity reached 30MW. Total capacity doubled to 60MW the following year.

As the first supplier of multicrystalline silicon in the country, Zhejiang Sino-Italian Photovoltaic Co. Ltd will double its capacity this year by purchasing advanced production equipment from abroad and upgrading its facilities.

Huayu Solar-Energy Development Co. Ltd, which specializes in monocrystalline and multicrystalline solar cells, will likewise increase its production capacity.

Another Zhejiang-based maker, Yuhuan Shinepower Co. Ltd, will raise its capacity by 30 percent. Last year, the company's solar cell output reached 10MW. Its main export markets are Europe, the United States and Japan.
