LeCroy NROs deliver 100x faster signal acquisition speed

The WaveExpert series from LeCroy Corp. is touted to be the world's highest performance digital oscilloscopes. These are the first products in the new instrument class called Near Real Time Oscilloscopes (NROs) that eliminate most of the constraints of traditional sampling scopes.

Members of the WaveExpert series feature high acquisition speed, a responsive GUI and a powerful suite of analysis tools, which are capabilities that have been enabled by another new technology from LeCroy?the Accelerated Throughput Architecture (ATA). According to the press release, the WaveExpert comes to market with up to 100GHz bandwidth and signal acquisition speeds 100 times faster than conventional sampling scopes. In addition to much higher throughput, the ATA technology allows for much longer acquisition memories and signal analysis algorithms that rival capabilities found only in real-time oscilloscopes.

Underlying ATA technology is a LeCroy exclusive Coherent Interleaved Sampling,(CIS) mode. The CIS time base permits the capture and display of very long serial data waveforms without the need for an external pattern trigger. This time base offers an acquisition rate of up to 10M samples per second, which is a 100x improvement over existing instruments in its' class, said the company. The WaveExpert series is a modular-based instrument that can accommodate up to four acquisition modules. Additionally, these devices have an optional source module. The WaveExpert series is available in three models: the WE 9000, NRO 9000 and the SDA 100G. Aimed at computer serial bus and telecommunications applications, the SDA 100G includes a serial data analysis package (fast eye pattern and jitter analysis) along with the high-throughput Coherent Interleaved Sampling (CIS) time base in its standard configuration. Meanwhile, the NRO 9000 has the CIS time base as a standard feature and Serial Data Analysis as an option.

The WaveExpert series also includes 5 electrical modules supporting bandwidths of 20-, 30-, 50-, 70- and 100GHz. Also available are 3 optical modules covering 10-, 28- and 50GHz bandwidths. The series includes electrical and optical clock recovery modules for operation when an external clock is not available. Also available, for the first time in an oscilloscope, is a differential serial data source module capable of generating serial data streams up to 12.5Gbps, added the company.

All three models of the WaveExpert series use LeCroy's user interface, which provides quick and easy access to over 50 measurements and math functions. Similar to a UI found on real-time oscilloscopes, the interface makes it a simple transition for engineers who are new to sampling oscilloscopes.
