Compact supplies flex customizing muscle

Touting a superior platform from which to bring customized designs to market, XP Power, with its fleXPower family of ac-dc supplies offers designers a broad array of power solutions from 400W to 2.2kW, and can deliver samples within 24 hours.

This newest generation of configurable supplies brings some new customized features as well, including series and parallel connection of units having different power levels. At the same time, the fleXPower offering boasts class-leading power density, 10 percent better than the company's previous generation, and 25 percent better than other competing products for the same output power.

Relying on a new mechanical design that uses a single bottom cover and U-channel top enclosure to allow for quick customization, these universal AC-input (or 120Vdc to 370Vdc input) supplies are available with up to six outputs from 3.3Vdc to 150Vdc. Each fleXPower supply consists of a chassis for the required power level in which there are 10 slots in models rated up to 700W, and 12 slots for the 900W versions, with plug-in modules used to build the power supply to the required rating and output configuration. An additional 200W is available from all chassis at a high line input, for a total of 1,100W. The 2,200W units comprise two 1,100W units; overall power density is as high as 7.3W/cubic inch.

The modular approach affords flexibility. Single-output modules with the same voltage can be paralleled to obtain increased output current with current sharing; these modules can be in completely separate fleXPower power supplies with their outputs connected directly together. Modules can be also be connected in series for up to 150Vdc output. All outputs can be adjusted to 10 percent. These supplies can be fitted with floating outputs and control ports, field replaceable fans, and advanced logic interfaces.

As for performance, typical supply specifications include a line regulation of better than 0.1 percent, load regulation of better than 1 percent, maximum ripple and noise of 50mV pp (at 20MHz), and efficiency of 84 percent at 115Vac input. MTBF is 225khrs, as per MIL-217F at 250C. The supplies are rated for operation over -20C to 70C. They are protected against over-voltage, overload and short-circuit, and over-temperature conditions. Units can be specified as industrial or medical types. Industrial versions meet EN61010/UL61010 and EN60950/UL60950. Medical versions meet EN60601-1/UL60601-1 and IEC60601-1-2 2nd edition. All versions, medical and industrial, meet their respective levels for leakage current, isolation and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

A product data sheet is available at the company's website. The fleXPower units are priced starting at $314 each for a 400W unit to $1,208 for a 2,200W model, based on 100 pieces.
