Following more than four years of SATA development on the reduced 2.5-inch platform, Fujitsu Computer Products of America Inc. announced its 100GB 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive that maximizes Native Command Queuing (NCQ) performance, offers low power consumption, higher shock tolerance, quiet operation, and complies with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) standards.

In January 2004, Fujitsu announced what it touts as the industry's first and only 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive. The MHV2100BH series hard disk drive features a hardware accelerator that maximizes NCQ performance, an important feature that enables the hard disk drive controller to intelligently and simultaneously queue and reorder up to 32 instructions, resulting in a significant improvement in overall hard disk drive performance. Moreover, the 100GB 2.5-inch SATA drive reduces power consumption, making it equivalent to traditional parallel ATA hard disk drives with quiet operation and RoHS compliance.

According to Joel Hagberg, VP of Marketing and Business Development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drives are driving innovation in the mobile platform, near-line enterprise and consumer electronics markets. "Fujitsu's expertise and history with this platform ensures that our partners and customers can invest and build these exciting new applications," Hagberg said. "We will continue to work closely with other storage leaders to identify new opportunities for the 2.5-inch SATA platform and do our part to increase performance and fuel product development."

The MHV2100BH hard disk drive features 5,400rpm rotational speed, 0.6W (typical) idle power consumption, 1.9W (typical) write power consumption, 1.5ms track to track seek time, 150MBps host transfer rate, 2ms operating shock, and capacities of 40GB, 60GB, 80GB or 100GB. Interfaces include SATA II extensions to Serial ATA 1.0a and electrical specification 1.0, ATA-7, NCQ, DIPM and HIPM fully supported, staggered spin up, and hot plug.

Additionally, Fujitsu announced its new MHV2080BS and MHV2080AS series hard disk drives, Extended Duty configurations of its rugged 2.5-inch SATA and PATA hard disk drive families. With up to 80GB of capacity, these new hard disk drives offer ample storage for multimedia presentations, digital audio and video, and graphics with the ability to function flawlessly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a result, they are particularly well suited for advanced storage requirements, including blade servers, network routers and POS applications.
