DSP development tools to speed digital comm designs

Designers of digital communication systems working with DSPs from Xilinx Inc. can add System Generator for DSP v7.1 development software and XtremeDSP Virtex-4 SX35, a development kit, to their tool belt. In particular, by paving a complete development path from system modeling to verified hardware, the pair of new products should make it easier to achieve high sample-rate or multichannel signal processing designs.

System Generator for DSP v7.1 provides system modeling of both signal flow and control path (when integrated with Xtreme DSP), algorithm development using math functions that are easily implemented in MATLAB, automatic hardware or bitstream development through a tight coupling to Xilinx ISE 7.1i and XSTtools, and design verification and debugging when using Xtreme DSP hardware in the loop and Chipscope Pro, a software debugging tool.

The XtremeDSP development kit includes a Virtex-4 SX35 FPGA containing up to 192 Xtreme DSP slices. Each slice contains an 18-by-18-bit multiplier and a 48bit adder that can be dynamically configured at every clock cycle. The kit also contains an analog card with a dual 14bit, 105MS/s ADC and a 14bit 160MS/s DAC. The kit's high-bandwidth hardware-in-the-loop cosimulation feature speeds simulation while verifying a design in hardware.

Used together, the tools let designers take advantage of many of Xilinx's algorithms for 3G and 4G base stations, including RACH, searcher, HSDPA, DUC, and DCC.

System Generator for DSP v7.1 works with Xilinx's ISE 7.1iFPGA design suite and is being sold at an introductory price of $995. The Virtex-4 SX35 XtremeDSP development kit sells for $2,495. The two products are offered together for $3,245.
