Xilinx Inc. said an upgraded version of its MicroBlaze "soft" processor now operates at up to 200MHz clock frequency in Virtex-4 FPGAs, a 25 percent improvement over previous versions.

In addition, the MicroBlaze version 4.0 32bit processor includes a floating point unit (FPU) option that enables embedded developers to accelerate system performance by as much as 120 times over software emulation, the company said.

The MicroBlaze soft processor core is available as part of the Xilinx Embedded Development Kit with a list price of $495. In addition to the MicroBlaze core, the EDK includes system tools to design an embedded application in a Xilinx FPGA. The VHDL source code for the MicroBlaze core is also available for purchase. Development boards with the MicroBlaze 4.00 processor are also available from Xilinx and its distributors, the company said.
