OLED manufacturer Universal Display Corp. (UDC) recently installed a full-color OLED deposition system at its development center in Ewing, New Jersey.

The ELVES020C OLED deposition system, which was designed and manufactured by Tokki Corp., produces OLED displays on rigid glass and flexible substrates, such as metallic foil or plastic. UDC also worked with Hitachi High-Technologies Corp. to acquire this technology.

The multichamber, semi-automatic deposition system is designed to deposit different types of organic and metallic films through vacuum sublimation and evaporation techniques with high-resolution patterning capabilities; the new design is capable of handling substrates, such as plastic, glass and metallic foils, whether they are rigid, flexible, transparent or opaque.

"This novel Tokki system greatly expands our capacity for prototyping a wide-range of full-color OLED displays and is particularly important in the pursuit of our flexible display initiative," says Steven Abramson, president and COO of Universal Display.

The system is part of UDC's aims to develop a wide array of technologies for flexible, full-color, high-resolution OLED displays. UDC received $1.7 million worth of Federal contract to develop prototypes of flexible OLED displays. The company has an initial investment of $4.3 million for the project.

"This is an important advancement for our company's future, and we are delighted to continue our strong working relationship with UDC," says Mikio Asada, director of Tokki's production group.
