Mainland China's optical components industry is on track to recovery. Optimistic of the market growth in the next several years, makers are now targeting high-end applications such as FTTH, FTTP and ULH WDM.

According to Huang Zhangyong, president of Photon Technology Co. Ltd, mainland China's entry to the WTO enables its optical components industry to become an important part of the worldwide market. However, mainland China's share only accounts for a little part of the global optical components market. Photon, on its part, aims to increase its presence in the international market.

The company is one of mainland China's largest optical components makers. It claims to account for 35 percent of mainland China's optical components supply last year. Its sales experienced a 46 percent growth compared with that of 2003. Last year, its exports accounted for 50 percent of its output, with sales reaching $19.5 million. Photon's overseas markets include Japan, France, the United States, India and Singapore. To increase its global presence, the company has established an office both in Germany and India and has set up two subsidiaries in the United States and Hong Kong SAR.

Bullish of the optical communications market, Photon will increase its diplexer and triplexer modules and transceiver output this year to 20,000 units a month. The company will continue to focus on SDH/SONET applications.

On its part, Accelink Technologies Co. Ltd has developed triplexer transceivers, splitters, filters and high-power magnifiers suited to FTTH applications. Established in January 2001, the company is claimed to be one of the leading optical components company in mainland China. It is located at the China Optical Valley in Wuhan. At present, Accelink has one DWDM device production line, with annual capacity of 100,000 channels. Its annual sales for DWDM devices reached $6.1 million last year. Among Accelink's overseas markets are North America, Europe and Japan.
