Makers predict mainland China's ultracapacitor industry will experience a 40 percent year-on-year increase for the next several years. With the increasing adoption of ultracapacitors as substitutes for batteries in the high-end segment, it is forecast that total sales in mainland China will reach Rmb390 million ($47.1 million at Rmb8:28:$1) this year, up 57.26 percent from Rmb248 million ($29.95 million) last year.

Mainland China has five to eight ultracapacitor makers. Sino Powerstar Electronic Technology Co. Ltd, claimed to be mainland China's pioneer in ultracapacitor production, offers single units rated at 2.7V and have capacitances ranging from 5F to 10kF and models rated at 2.7V to 400V with capacitances of 0.1F to 10kF. The company has a current monthly production capacity of 350,000 units.

According to a recent report by market research firm Frost & Sullivan, the world's ultracapacitor industry has an annual growth of 157 percent and 49 percent for output and sales revenues, respectively, from 2002 to 2009.

With ultracapacitor demand in the Asia-Pacific region forecast to exceed 90 million units, mainland China makers are increasing their production capacities. In addition, more manufacturers are expected to enter the line.

United States, Japan and Russia currently lead the global ultracapacitor industry, with makers such as Maxwell Technologies Inc. and NEC Corp. occupying the majority of world market. To keep up with their foreign counterparts, mainland China makers are upgrading their production technologies and improving their product quality and R&D. For instance, Shanghai Aowei Technology Development Co. Ltd has established a partnership with a Russian company for its ultracapacitor R&D. The company has set up the first "Ultracapacitor Research & Development Center" in mainland China and undertaken the National 863 Plan of "Ultra Capacitor Industrialization Key Technology Research."
