Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) announced that its PTH12040 and PTH04040 are the industry's first POLA (point-of-load alliance) compatible, plug-in power modules for 50A and 60A service.

Achieving power conversion efficiency up to 96 percent, the compact (nonisolated) dc-dc converters are suited for powering the most densely populated computing platforms and servers. The modules, an extension to the company's PTHxx family, feature Auto-Track sequencing. This feature allows the outputs of multiple modules to track one another or a common voltage during power-up and power-down transitions.

The PTH12040, suited for use with a loosely regulated 12V intermediate bus, operates from input voltages from 8V to 14V and delivers up to 50A. The PTH04040, working from a 2.95V to 5.5V input and thus suited to systems using a 3.3V or 5.5V distribution bus, provides up to 60A at 0.8V to 3.6V.

Other module features include margin up/down facility, tight load regulation, and output over-current and over-temperature shutdown circuitry that protects against most load faults. The modules also include programmable under-voltage lockout that allows the user to customize the supply's turn-on threshold to his application.

The PTH12040 and PTH04040, available in through-hole and low-profile, double-sided surface-mount packages, are each priced at $35 per unit in 1,000 quantities. Product specification sheets are available at the company's website for the PTH12040 and PTH04040.

POLA-compatible supplies offer customers non-isolated modules with the same footprint and form factor. They are fully interoperable, and thus provide true second-source availability.
