Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd and Cambridge Display Technology Ltd. (CDT) are set to form a joint venture company in Tokyo this summer that will develop and supply polymer materials for polymer-type organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays and lighting.

Sumitomo, a major chemical manufacturer in Japan, has been working together with CDT since 2002.

The joint venture, as yet unnamed, will be able to employ intellectual properties from the parent companies. CDT is one of the leading companies in materials for polymer OLED. Sumitomo acquired Dow Chemical Company's Lumation business recently (see May 18 story) and intends to pass the Lumation intellectual property exclusively to the joint venture company together with its own technologies fostered since 1989.

Sumitomo is also set to transfer its production and supply operation to the joint venture. CDT will be involved in production and supply for the first time with the joint venture.

The joint venture will work on improving the performance of existing materials such as polyfluorene chemistry and also on developing next-generation materials such as dendrimer chemistry that CDT gained from the acquisition of Opsys in October 2002.
