Spansion LLC, the joint venture of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and Fujitsu Ltd, is expected to order ORNAND flash memory from Chartered Semiconductor Mfg Ltd and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC).

Spansion is slated to go into trial production of ORNAND flash memory products in the second half of the year, while its volume production is scheduled for next year.

AMD and Fujitsu may not be able to allocate capacity for the joint venture, thereby pushing the company to place orders from UMC and Chartered. The agreement is expected to be completed by next quarter.

The parent companies are helping the joint venture in manufacturing 8in wafers through production support, but Spansion considers producing ORNAND flash products at a 12-inch wafer facility. It is preparing for the expected surge in demand for ORNAND flash memory as sales of 3G mobile phones began to pick up.
