Tantalum polymer capacitor meets lead-free requirements in new case size

AVX Corp. has developed a new low-profile, tantalum solid electrolytic chip capacitor with a conductive polymer electrode that meets the lead-free 260C reflow requirements. The parts also guarantee the equivalent series resistance (ESR) specification values after reflow soldering.

Suitable for power management systems with operating temperatures up to 125C, the new TCJ series parts, designated the T case, offer a capacitance range 10?F to 100?F. These low-profile tantalum capacitors use patented technology to offer lower ESR, safer non-ignition failure mode and better capacitance retention as compared to other polymer devices and conventional MnO2 electrode capacitors, said the company.

The 1.2mm height makes them ideal for use in portable and handheld devices such as cellular phones, PDAs and digital cameras. "Existing competitor parts have been unable to reach the industry lead-free reflow solder specifications of 3 x 260C," said Danny Lane, AVX product manager, in a statement. "Our new TCJ polymer family leaves them all in the cold by also guaranteeing the ESR specification values after reflow soldering. We're the only chip manufacturer that will do that."

Pricing for the TCJ series starts at 45 cents in quantities of 10,000. Delivery time is from stock to ten weeks.
