The new digital potentiometers from maxim integrated products integrate EEPROM that simulates mechanical potentiometers by storing the wiper position prior to power down. According to the company, this capability significantly reduces chip size compared to mechanical pots.

Touted to be the industry's smallest SPI-compatible, dual 1024-tap, nonvolatile digital potentiometers available in a 5-by-5mm TQFN package, the MAX5494 to MAX5499 devices offer ratiometric and end-to-end temperature coefficients as low as 5ppm/C and 35ppm/C, respectively. These products save power by requiring <1.5?A in standby and operating from a 2.7V to 5.25V single supply. End-to-end resistances of 10 kilohms and 50 kilohms are available.

The MAX549x are offered in dual resistor-divider, dual variable resistor or resistor-divider/variable resistor configurations. An industry standard three-wire SPI serial interface makes these new digital pots simple to operate. Prices start at $1.95 (1,000-up, FOB USA).
