Royal Philips Electronics has announced plans to invest 40 million euro (about $50 million) in backlighting to improve the picture quality of widescreen LCD TVs and consume less energy.

Philips Lighting factory in Roosendaal, The Netherlands, is set to benefit from the investment which is expected to positively impact skilled employment, Philips said. Philips did not say whether this meant the creation of additional jobs, pay rises for existing employees, or a mixture of the two.

Theo van Deursen, chief executive officer of Philips Lighting, said, "This investment shows our continuous ambition to set the pace in the lighting industry combined with a systematic approach to seeking out new and fast growing market opportunities. Our Aptura LCD backlighting technology is a major innovation in picture quality that fully meets the needs and desires of the consumer."
