Seeking to slash downtime costs during resetting of telecom networks, Agere Systems and NComm Inc. have developed a software that can dynamically reset host chip processors controlling network equipment with no interruption in user traffic.

Agere, developed a software that runs on its Payload Plus network processor chips, while NComm developed a software for Agere's Supermapper and Ultramapper mapper chips. The software enables service providers to reduce network outage time an average of 87 hours annually, at a cost of $42,000 per hour, according to market research firm Gartner Group.

NComm's software, called Trunk Management Software, has a feature called warm start, which when coupled with Agere's network processor software, enables shut-down of specific parts of the equipment without disrupting voice, video, or data calls. This partial shutdown enables faster equipment restarts with less disruption, the companies said.

"With ever-increasing demands in network service reliability, equipment manufacturers to whom we sell our network processors and mapper chips are valuing software capabilities that enable warm start," said Sindhu Xirasagar, senior marketing manager with Agere Systems, in a statement.

In addition, NComm's software allows software to be installed without corrupting the transmission path or interfering with existing traffic on an active WAN interface.

NComm's TMS is delivered with full-function turnkey software and complete source code. Pricing for an NComm TMS license starts at $20,000.

Agere's Supermapper, Ultramapper, APP550 and APP650 network processors are available now. Agere customers can also buy NComm software operating on Agere's mapper chips directly from NComm.
