LED makers are targeting new applications in 15-inch and 17-inch monitor backlighting as prices decline for blue LEDs used in handset keypads, according to Unity Opto Technology Co. Ltd. The company says quotes for blue LEDs used in handset keypads went down from NT$20 ($0.63 at NT$31.31:$1) in 2000 to NT$0.6 ($0.02) to date.

Unity Opto says the market situation is pushing makers to target other applications, particularly the 15in and 17in monitor panel backlighting. With price gap between LEDs and CCFLs projected to decrease to 30 percent by late next year, the company believes that LED backlight modules will take over CCFLs for small-to-medium-sized LCDs in 2007.

The company adds that intense competition from mainland China makers also puts a strain on Taiwan-based makers in terms of sales performance. LED maker Harvatek Corp. agrees, saying that Taiwan-based manufacturers are now focusing on high-luminance LEDs instead of blue LEDs for handset LCD panels and camera flashes. It expects mainland China to become the world's largest supplier of LEDs for handset keypads.

According to Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA), mainland China's production of handset-use blue LED chips went up by 225 percent last year. The country expects another 200 percent growth for the segment this year.
